Visit the Ringstrasse, an ambitious piece of city planning by the Habsburgs, which is based around a single street that encircles the center of Vienna. One of the first buildings erected in this area was the Votive Church, and soon after, a multitude of architectural styles were used to decorate this striking area. See St. Stephen’s Cathedral, with its “lace-in-stone” spire – the symbol of Vienna, the University of Vienna, the Staatsoper (State Opera), the Hofburg Imperial Palace), the Rathaus (City Hall), Parliament, the Kunsthistorisches (Art History) Museum and the Belvedere Palaces. Careful restoration following architectural neglect during the Communist Era reinstated the city’s fairy-tale beauty, with renaissance and baroque buildings lining the arc of the Vltava River. In the summer, the streets are populated with performers entertaining the many visitors. About 67% of Prague’s Jewish population (36,500 people) perished during the Nazi occupation.
